Mosey on over to Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade and test your pioneer survival skills. The guns used here fire no pellets or projectiles of any kind. Instead, the shooter aims an infrared light at his or her target, and when the rifle strikes a sensor, a hit is counted. No one and no thing get harmed in the process!
The Arcade’s scene is set in the fabled Boot Hill of Tombstone, Arizona. Amid the sand and cacti of the rugged southwest landscape are about 100 targets. Purchase your tokens and mosey on up to a replica .54-caliber Hawkins buffalo rifle and take down as many moving and stationary targets as possible, including a jail, a hotel, a bank, a cemetery, covered wagons, a cactus, and a mine. Targets light up and ding when hit. It’s a fun way to challenge your pioneer skills.

When my teenager was little, my husband and I did not allow him to play with guns, but boys will be boys! Although we purchased none for him, he ended up with an innovative collection by converting toy golf clubs into rifles or breaking off their handles to make them pistols. Wooden blocks, Legos, and Tinker Toys were also formed into firearms so he could get the bad guys (he wanted to be a policeman back then). He still has an interest in law enforcement and has learned to properly and responsibly handle a real gun, and he encourages those with similar interests to do the same.
Our second son is more of a sword and light saber kind of kid, but he does have fun with today’s takeaway activity, which is to make a rubber band shooter.
Our ONE toy gun rule is that you cannot shoot people or family pets. With that in mind, follow this tutorial and have a “blast” taking down aliens, hunting (imaginary) ferocious animals, or knocking down targets in your backyard.
You will need:
1 or more rubber bands
2 12-inch wooden dowels
1 clothespin
Duct tape
Scissors
What to do:
1) Cut a notch in the end of one dowel.
2) Cut the other dowel in half
3) Cut a 12-inch strip of duct tape. Cut it in half length-wise so you have two long, narrow strips.
4) Wrap each piece of tape around small dowels, securing them to un-notched end of long dowel as gun handle.
5) Repeat step 3.
6) Use tape strips to secure clothespin to top of dowel barrel on the handle-end of gun, with the closed end of pin pointing toward end of barrel.
7) Insert rubber band into notch. Pull and secure into clothespin.
8) Aim and release clothespin to shoot.
